Rik Cornelissen @ Metropole
Rik Cornelissen Accordionist, composer, arranger and teacher Rik Cornelissen (1984) is an innovative and contemporary jazz and classical accordionist. Thanks to his broad education and knowledge of many musical styles, he knows how to set the accordion as a modern and versatile instrument. Rik debuted in 2014 with his solo album Traveler, on which he received rave reviews. He worked with, among others, Bert van den Brink, Ramon Valle, Teus Nobel, Juan Pablo Dobal, Ben van den Dungen, Rob van Kreeveld, Angelo Verploegen, Miranda van Kralingen, Francis van Broekhuizen, Vincent Houdijk, Egon Kracht, Claudio Jacomucci, Tuur Florizoone , the Radio Philharmonic String Quartet and many others. He was involved in various projects for YoOpera, Opera Minora, Opera Zuid and as a session musician for the films Zwartboek (Paul Verhoeven), Van Gogh: a house for Vincent (Pim Hoeve) and the theater show NOW! (Mini & Maxi). As a principal subject teacher Accordion, Band Coaching, Methodology and Teaching Practice Development, Rik is affiliated with the Jazz & Pop department of the ArtEZ conservatory in Arnhem, one of the few places in the world where students can study jazz accordion. Rik studied Classical Music and Argentine Tango (Bachelor, Codarts Rotterdam, 2006) and Jazz & Pop (Master, ArtEZ Arnhem, 2009). After completing his studies, he traveled through South and Central America for 9 months, after which he continued his studies in 2011 at the Scuola Superiore di Fisarmonica (Urbino, Italy) with one of the world’s most prominent accordionists of the moment; Claudio Jacomucci. In 2014, Rik debuted with the solo album Traveler. In his quest for the possibilities of accordion in jazz and Latin jazz, he focused on a pianistic way of thinking. These new possibilities and sounds are characteristic of Rick’s way of playing; introverted, thoughtful, expectant, and then explosive, virtuoso and grooving. In 2015 he released the album “Birds of Paradise” with his group Tocar, in collaboration with the Radio Philharmonic String Quartet (now: Carezza String Quartet). The album contains 3 works by Rick’s hand and received excellent reviews. In 2016 they were with Tocar a guest at VPRO’s Free Sounds in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. The new trio TRIFID, initiated by Rik in 2017, is a collaboration with the talented vibraphonist Vincent Houdijk and bassist Maciej Domaradzki. TRIFID is an ode to the universe, its own compositions are mysterious, colorful and serene. Their debut album Dreamscape will be released in 2018. As a composer and arranger, Rick’s main goal is to create new music for accordion, for both solo and for various ensembles and groups with which he works. His compositions are often inspired by his travels and fascination with nature and the universe, floating between styles ranging from jazz and classical to Brazilian, Argentinian and other South American music.
